September has flown by and all this talk of the new sheriff in town has dispersed. All the children have settled in and we are ready for the new school year.

School gates: The school gates will be closed from 9:40-1.30 to facilitate the children using the yard for break and lunchtime. There is ample parking space beside the pedestrian entrance so please use here during the day if you need to pay the school a visit.

Teacher car park exit: Children should not use this exit and parents should not collect their children from this exit. We do understand that the pedestrian exit can be busy but this is only an inconvenience and the safety of the children is of paramount importance.

Training in the morning: There will be hurling/Camogie training each Monday and Wednesday and Athletics each Tuesday and Thursday (when its dry) from 9am. This is for classes from 3rd-6th only. Please make sure the children have football boots, hurl, helmet and a change of socks. Basically bring in gear every day! A healthy start makes for a happier school!

Hurling Blitz: Congratulations to the boys and girls who competed in the Carndonagh Hurling/Camogie blitz during the week. The boys were split up into different teams because we were too good. The girls were kept together and reached the final defeating a Division one team Carndonagh in the final. The children were a pleasure to bring to the match. Their behaviour was exceptional and they were a credit to their families and school. Go St. Aengus!!!

Mica: As you may have already been aware of, the school building has been affected by mica. The Department of Education were informed and the school has been sanctioned an emergency works grant to fix the problem. The repair work will commence next Monday(we hope), with work been completed in 6-8 weeks. There will be safety fencing and all precautions have taken place to cause as little disruption as possible to the school day. Please remind your children the importance of staying away from building sites and their associated dangers.

New building: The new building with  one classroom and learning support room has also been sanctioned. The planning permission has been granted and we have received drawings from the architect. We now must tender for the works. We hope to commence work before the end of the calendar year with the work taking about 20 weeks. Parents should be very careful when accessing and leaving the school. It is vital that everyone follows the safety procedures. The school office will not be as accessible during this work so visits or appointments should only be made when necessary.

School closure: Reminder that the school is closed on Tuesday the 10th of October to facilitate in-service training for the teachers in the new Primary Language Curriculum.

Cake Sale and Coffee Morning: The children/school/Parents Association have raised over €950 to help people who have been affected by the recent flooding. Thanks to all who contributed to this great cause.

Children’s Mass: The children’s choir and readers will be in Burt Chapel this Sunday the 1st of October at 11.15. All welcome. Well done to Maureen who has put in a huge effort to prepare the children for each mass. Her work will most certainly provide her with a direct line to above!

I have had some very positive and productive meetings with the Parents association and Board of Management. I have been hugely impressed by their hard work and professionalism. Communication is key to a successful school so if you have any suggestions please know that my door is always open.
