May June newsletter

The sun is out and the first round of ice pops have been handed out. Remember to cover your children in sun cream daily as our outdoor classrooms will be in full use for the next couple of weeks.

Night out Fundraiser: Congratulations to our Parents Association who raised just under €10,000 for the school at our David Craig night out. Thank you to David and Joanne Lily who got everyone up out of their seats and provided a great night’s entertainment. Thank you to An Grianan Hotel who provided the venue for the evening. They are always great supporters of our school. The school will use all the money raised to provide much-needed IT resources and equipment for our new Autism classes. Your support means everything to the school and we are greatly energised by your backing.

A massive congratulations to our First Holy Communion and Confirmation children who received their sacraments over the last number of weeks. The children were so well prepared and were a credit to their families, community and school. A big thank you must go to Ms. Doherty and Mr. Kelly for their hard work and dedication in preparing the children. You couldn’t forget all our helpers on the day who provided an award-winning spread for our hunger communion children and families.

Open day: We hope to have our open day to celebrate the opening of our modular classroom and newly reconfigured autism classrooms on Friday the 31st of May. We will start at 9.30. Everyone can go visit their children in the classroom and go and see the new classrooms. At 10 am, we will have tea/coffee and treats in the hall where some songs and poems from the children will entertain you. We hope to be all finished by 11.00. Everyone is welcome.

The school will be closed on Friday the 9th of June for the election. We close for the summer on Friday the 21st of June at 12 noon. The full calendar for next year will be attached below and it can always be accessed through the website at https://staengusbridgend.com/school-calendar-year-20172018/

Junior Infant Induction Day: Open day for junior infant parents on Thursday the 13th at 9.45 am. The children will meet their new teacher and there will be a short meeting in the hall afterwards.

School tours: Please ensure you complete the permission slips on Aladdin for all school tours. If you are having difficulty with paying for the tours, please contact me directly and it will be dealt with very discreetly.

Special medical needs: If your child has any special medical needs, like asthma, or allergic reactions please let the office know.

Hair lice: Please check your child’s hair regularly to prevent those pesky creatures from coming into our school uninvited.

Sport: We continue to excel in all codes of sport. Participation from all the children is our key goal and we hope to continue this with our Athletics, Soccer, Hurling, and Camogie in the coming weeks. Hard luck to our 5-a-side boys who played in the Ulster final on Wednesday. A win, a loss and a draw saw us finish second in Ulster. As always the boys were a pleasure to coach and train. They were a credit to their families, school and community A big thank you to Pierce and Michelle Callaghan who sponsored a half zip top for our boy’s team. It made the whole experience even more special for the children.

Well done to all 38 athletes who were very competitive in the County Athletics championships in Finn Valley yesterday.

Renaming of our field: The school has decided to officially open and rename the top pitch “Páirc Choilm” after our departed friend and grass man Colm Grant whose first anniversary will be in the coming weeks. The senior hurling league was named after him and he was the proudest man in Burt when he presented the medals last year. There will be a presentation ceremony and official opening of the pitch after the final on June 10th.

Birthday invitation: Birthday invitations should only be given out in the classroom by children if everyone in the class is invited to the party. If you only invite the girls/boys or a selection of the children please do so discreetly outside school. The school cannot give out the phone numbers of parents.

Uniform: With the hot weather starting we would encourage you to check the labels of your child’s jumper and jackets. When you have 40 children taking their jumpers off together it can result in items of clothing being misplaced. Navy shorts (or as close as possible) are allowed for boys and girls.

My door is always open,

Séamus
